Eco Fashion

November 24, 2016

Eco Fashion is gaining speed as awareness of global warming and the resulting human causes are being brought to light through social and main stream media.  Many of us are beginning to reflect on our own lifestyle choices.  Questioning, how can we make more choices that better the environment, our personal health and the welfare of others.  Here are a few tips to consider or use as we learn and grow.

What is Eco Fashion?

"The consideration of the environment and the sustainable effects of production, working conditions and fair-trade, zero waste productions, environmentally-conscious textile treatment and development."  see www.ecofashionweek.com for a great source of information

How can we make more Eco forward fashion choices in our daily lives?

After listening to author, designer and teacher Sass Brown (www.ecofashiontalk.com) speak at the Collective Conversation during Eco Fashion Week Season 11. I came a way with a few great inspiring ideas on how we can feel motivated and excited about making progressive change.  "What role fashion can play in making change in our world."  To honour each positive step we take no matter how small.  That it's a step in the direction of change we'd like to see in the world.

Points to consider when we are in buyer style mode.  Choose ones that are most important to you and start there :)

* clothing designed to decompose (sustainable)

* brands with a social mission

* avoiding oil based textiles like polyester

* made locally or ethically sourced

* artisan hand crafted

* fairtrade

* made with organic chemical free

* vegan, no leather, wool or fur

* recycled or up-cycled fashion

* slow fashion instead of fast fashion

* brands that promote body positivity and promote various shapes of beauty

Choosing to shop at local business, supporting small boutiques over fast fashion mega stores is a great start.  Then looking at the labels, are the fabrics organic?  Could they decompose?  Is it something that could last in your wardrobe rather than being tossed away?  Are they made without any harm to animals?  Were the people making the clothing paid a fair wage?  These are a few points to consider.  It can be overwhelming to think of a complete eco fashion purchasing make over.  Let's take it one step at a time.  Here's to keeping stylish, considerate and kind.

Peace & Kindness
